Should You Really Follow Your Heart?
Everywhere we turn, we hear it: Follow your heart. From movies to music, culture tells us that our feelings are the ultimate guide to happiness. But what if that advice is actually a trap? What if our hearts, while powerful, aren’t always pointing us toward what’s best?
The Bible makes a bold statement: "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure." (Jeremiah 17:9) That might not be the feel-good quote we were hoping for, but it’s one we need to hear. Our emotions can be real—but they aren’t always right.
The Dangers of Blindly Following Your Heart
❗️ Eve in the Garden – She saw, she wanted, she followed her heart... and it led to humanity’s fall. Just because something looks good doesn’t mean it’s from God.
❗️ Samson & Delilah – Samson ignored every red flag because of his emotions. His downfall? Letting his heart overrule wisdom.
❗️ David & Bathsheba – Even a man after God’s own heart got caught up in impulse. One moment of following feelings led to years of consequences.
❗️ Peter’s Denial – Fear took over, and in a split second, Peter denied even knowing Jesus. Our hearts often tell us to run from what’s hard—wisdom tells us to stand firm.
So, If We Don’t Follow Our Hearts… What Do We Follow?
The answer isn’t to ignore emotions completely, but to submit them to something greater—God’s wisdom. Proverbs 3:5-6 lays it out clearly: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding."
How to Shift from Feelings to Faith
✅ Slow down and test it. Not every strong feeling leads to a wise decision.
✅ Check it against God’s Word. If it contradicts Scripture, it’s not wisdom.
✅ Seek wise counsel. Get insight from spiritually mature people.
✅ Look for confirmation. Pay attention to how God is aligning things.
✅ Step out in faith. Wisdom isn’t just knowing—it’s acting on what God reveals.
The Hard Path is Often the Right One
Jesus told His disciples to cross a stormy sea—on purpose. Why? Because faith is built in the challenge, not in the comfort. Following wisdom over emotions won’t always feel easy, but it will always lead to purpose, growth, and a deeper walk with God.
So, the next time your heart pulls you in one direction, pause and ask: Is this leading me closer to God or away from Him? Easy isn’t always right, and feelings aren’t always truth. Seek the higher wisdom, and you’ll always find the better path.
